How to deal with commitment issues, it’s not the issues you think.

Commitment will give you freedom

In my last post, we looked at turning a dream into goals and an action plan. This will get you started. Commitment will keep you going and pull you into the future.

Commitment is to have the aptitude of sticking with something long after your excitement is gone. It’s not always easy, and it takes a lot of will to stay committed to a project, a plan or a goal. I did not always think that way.  Commitment was not my strong suit; in fact, I was not too fond of the word and all it meant as I thought it got in the way of my personality. I always thought of myself as a free spirit, do things when I want to and when I feel like it, not afraid of change, and I was proud of myself for being that way.

When I became an entrepreneur, a few years ago, I soon realized that this was not serving me well. Things were starting to pile up, paperwork, courses, books and articles to read because I did not feel like doing them anymore. I was so busy dreaming, reading and learning, which I do these very well. Something was not right; what was it? I found myself get excited about a lot of opportunities and then procrastinating to execute them. What am I doing wrong? I have so much wisdom and knowledge and was able to teach my client and see them get results.

Aha Moment

It finally dawned on me when I started reviewing the material for the MENS SANA program that I had it all wrong! Yes, it is good to be flexible, open and nimble, AND you also have to be disciplined and committed! Wow, I finally figured it out! I felt I was in an AA meeting saying: “My name is Joanne, and I have commitment issues.”

When I applied the principles of having a dream or vision, writing goals in support of that and putting an action plan together and looking at it every day. I became FREE!  I now realized that commitment would give you freedom!

Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek.
― Mario Andretti

Commitment issues, or a fear of commitment, is a term often used about romantic relationships, I have no problem committing to my marriage and my relationship, it was in the area of my work that it was evident.

Mens Sana Program

Commitment is the first module and the second session in the 13-week MENS SANA program that I deliver. MENS SANA is Latin for “Healthy Mind” and we all need to take care of our minds in stressful times. In the first session, you will do a self-assessment on what your dreams are, your weaknesses and your strengths and start building on your action plan. Every module feeds on one another and gives you the life-skills required to negotiate life and identify what gets in the way of you achieving your goals. You will become more self-aware of those things, and you will have tools to manage them.

I would love to hear your comments on commitment in the form below.
